The Sun Still Rises: Meditations on Faith at Midlife

Author: Leonora Tubbs Tisdale March 21, 2017

At the age of 50, the author of this book, Leonora Tubbs Tisdale, resigned from her job to experience a personal “year of Jubilee,” a sort of extended season of Sabbath, a period of reflection and renewal as Leviticus describes for the ancient Israelite community. Tisdale thinks that midlife is an especially rich time to have such a “year of Jubilee,” to ask oneself important questions pertaining to vocation, spiritual nourishment, relationship forgiveness, and how the inevitable losses that come with the territory of aging open one up to new possibilities. The devotional reflections collected here were written during Tisdale’s year of reflection and prayer and are organized under larger topic headings such as “The Gift of Friendship and Family,” and “Battling Illness.” Each essay is followed by a scripture passage and some questions for reflection. Leonora Tubbs Tisdale is an experienced pastor and the Clement-Muehl Professor of Homiletics at Yale Divinity School.
